Philanthropist, Sports Team Owner. He was an heir to Pennsylvania's Widener Family who consistantly made Forbes Magazine's list as one of the wealthiest families in the United States. He served as chairman of the board at Widener University. He also served on numerous boards of various foundations that benefited handicapped children in Pennsylvania, Florida and Maine. Dixon was the owner of the Philadelphia 76ers professional basketball team from 1976 to 1981. In 1976 he authorized the signing of Julius (Dr. J) Erving, a star of the ABA's New York Nets. Erving would go on to become a sports icon in Philadelphia. Under Dixon's ownership the team would have two NBA Final appearances (1977, 1980). In 1981 he sold the team to Harold Katz. In 1981 he became a part owner of the Philadelphia Phillies.
