Allen C. Van Zant, 59, of Akron, unexpectedly went to be with his Lord on Sunday, April 20, 2008.
Born in Rutland, Vermont on March 3, 1949, age 59 years, 1 month and 17 days, he is a son of the late Paul Van Zant and Janice G. (Martin) Van Zant, Akron.
He served as a Parole Agent for the Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Parole for 15 years, and was Chief Instructor for E-Company, Small Arms Readiness Group, Fort Dix, New Jersey. He was a member of Swamp Evangelical Lutheran Church, Reinholds where he formerly served on Church Council. An active member of the Army Reserves Unit, he was a United States Army Veteran, serving in the Vietnam War and a recipient of the Bronze Star Medal. Allen graduated from Ephrata High School and Pennsylvania State University.
He loved being a father to his children and adored his granddaughter Melia A. Van Zant. He had many interests and enjoyed traveling, foreign languages, and the Asian Culture.
Surviving in addition to his mother are his children, Alex C., husband of Melissa K. (Blatt) Van Zant, Little Rock Air Force Base, Arkansas, and Allison K. Van Zant, Florence, Italy; brothers James H., husband of Janet Van Zant, New Freedom, PA and David P., husband of Judith Van Zant, Virginia Beach, Virginia; sisters Susan E., wife of Donald Colbert, Perrineville, New Jersey, G.Patricia, wife of Williaml Koontz, Reading, and Cheri A. Van Zant, Akron; 13 nieces and nephews; and his former wife, Susan M. (Binkley) Van Zant, Denver.
The Celebration of Allen's Life will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2008 at 2:00 PM in Swamp Evangelical Lutheran Church, 275 Swamp Church Road, Reinholds, PA 17569 with the Reverend Dennis L. Trout officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Allen's memory may be made to his church."
