"Stephen Matus Sr., 76, Cedarville resident

Stephen Matus Sr., 76, passed away, Thursday, September 4th in his home in Cedarville, Pennsylvania. He was born in Philadephia, as the third child to the late Alexander and Anna Matusevich, both immigrants from Russia and Poland, respectively.

Mr. Matus grew up in Mount Airy, a suburb of Philadelphia, with his brother Alexander and two sisters Anna and Mary, all now deceased. He graduated from Germantown High School in 1951 and enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He served as an Army Corps Engineer in Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea, South Korea, Japan, and the Kwajelin Atoll before being honorably discharged in 1956. Mr. Matus went back to school and graduated from Temple University in 1959 with an Associate of Technology in Architectural Design and Building Construction. He used the carpenter skills taught by his father, a master carpenter, his Army experience, and the college education to start a career in construction. Mr. Matus started as a carpenter and took on increased responsibilities as a carpenter foreman and ultimately a general superintendent leading and completing many major construction projects.

During a two-decade span he worked on more than 30 major construction projects throughout the greater Philadelphia area, often being commended for his work. Additionally, he completed numerous major home improvement projects on his houses in Roslyn and Cedarville and helped his four sons on projects of their own.

Mr. Matus moved to Cedarville from Roslyn, Pennsylvania, the summer of 1971 to afford his family a better lifestyle. He served as a Merit Badge Counselor and on the Adult Leader Council of Boy Scout Troop 95 in Cedarville, the troop to which his sons belonged. During retirement, Mr. Matus traveled with his wife Doris and spent much of his time improving and maintaining their almost-century old house and three-acre property.

Mr. Matus is survived by his wife of 50 years, 4 sons and 11 grandchildren. His wife, the former Doris Ann Moe, a Registered Nurse, retired from Montgomery County Geriatrict and Rehabilitation Center. His oldest Son, Stephen Jr. resides with his wife, Theresa and four children in New Palestine, Indiana. His second Son, Harold resides in New London, PA with his fiancee, Karen Carski and his two children. His third son, Paul w/ his wife Tammy and three children, resides in Poplar Springs, Maryland. His fourth son, Kenneth resides with his wife, Sandy and three daughters in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. on Monday, September 8, 2008 at the Houck & Gofus Funeral Home, Inc., 955 North Charlotte Street, Pottstown, PA. The Rev. Dr. Donald B. Eisenhauer will officiate.
