"Trooper Gerhart was an 18-year veteran with the State Police Troop J in Lancaster. Since 1977, he was one of two state police fire marshals investigating fires in Lancaster County.

After a Sunday evening viewing attended by more than 1,500 persons, Gerhart's funeral was held at Mellinger's Lutheran Church in Schoeneck at 11 a.m. Monday with Rev. W. Robert Kurz officiating. Burial followed in Mellinger's Cemetery. The Roseboro Funeral Home, Denver, was in charge of arrangements.

Dennis L. Gerhart, 39, of Horseshoe Trail Road, Denver R2, and Donald R. Martin, 36 of 775 E. Main St., were buried Monday, victims of a head-on, two car collision early last Thursday morning along Rt., 272 in Ephrata Township.

Gerhart was the husband of Brenda A Taylor Gerhart. They had two sons, Steven W. and Martin E. II, both at home. He was the son of William W. and Ethel M. Martin Gerhart, Stevens R1.

A 1959 graduate of Cocalico High School, Gerhart attended the University of Miami for a year before entering the Pennsylvania State Police Academy at Hershey. He graduated in 1963.

His first assignment was with the Pocono substation along the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Plymouth Meeting. He was assigned to the county troop in 1967, where he worked one year at headquarters in Lancaster and four years with the then substation in Ephrata.

In 1974, he became a criminal investigator at Ephrata. In 1977, he became a fire marshall, a post he filled until his death.

Gerhart was a member of Mellinger's Lutheran Church, Schoeneck, and its church council; Ephrata Lodge 665; Free and Accepted Masons; Lancaster Lodge of Perfection; Reading Consistory; Rajah Temple Shrine in Reading; and the Lancaster County Shrine Club.

He served on the advisory council of DeMolay and was committee chairman of Boy Scout Troop 115 in Schoeneck and committeeman of Boy Scout Troop 32 in Denver.

He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Lodge 1933, Ephrata, and the Big Brothers of Lancaster County.

In addition to his wife, sons and parents, he is survived by two sisters, Cathy J., wife of William M. Purcell, Denver, and Billie Jo Gerhart, Stevens R1; and his paternal grandmother, Bertha D. Gerhart, Stevens R1.

Pallbearers at Gerhart's funeral, mostly from the police community were: honorary Harlan B. Zimmerman, Jene A. Willwerth, William A. Henry and Gerald T. Szmurlo; and active, Ray T. Solt, Keith Hinkle, Serell Ulrich, David B. Fisher, Sidney C. Mentzer and John S. Gerhart."
