He married Julia Harrison and they had 3 children. After the death of her he married Laura Roberts Pressly. Laura also had 3 children by a former marriage. Together they had 5 more children.
Zack was a farmer, teacher and civic leader in the Olivette and Craggy communities of Buncombe County. He was a committeeman of West Buncombe school and a lay minister in the First Christian Church.
