The son of George & Margaret Schaum, in 1860 he was a laborer living in Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 2" tall and had dark hair and dark eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted as a substitute and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg March 28, 1865, as a private with Co. A, 88th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 30, 1865. He is in the roster as "Shaum."

In 1890, he was living in Canton, Stark County, Ohio, but in 1903 entered the Soldiers' Home in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio, until he went AWOL and was dropped from the rolls. He returned to Harrisburg where he supported himself as a rag picker. He died from a "crushed skull," the result of being "run down by Central Penna Traction Co. car - accidental." The car had to be jacked up to free his body. Per his obituary in the Harrisburg Telegraph, he was still married but hadn't lived with his wife in years.
