In 1860, he was a painter but his whereabouts are unknown as he is not found in that census with any certainty. He stood 5' 6" tall and had light hair and hazel eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg August 9, 1864, mustered into federal service there August 18 as a private with Co. C, 201st Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 23, 1865.

He married Elizabeth Ann Simmers ca. 1869 and fathered Lydia (b. @1868), George Washington (b. 04/10/70), John Reiley (b. 07/08/76), and Elizabeth M. (b. 02/09/83 - married Reily Boas Adams). He died at his home where he had been a member of Hartranft Post 58, G.A.R.
