Per his death certificate, he was the son of Henry Ritner, but in 1850 he was living with Michael & Elizabeth Ritner in Silver Spring Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. In 1860, he was a laborer presumably still living there but is not found in that census.

A Civil War veteran, please note that the regiment on the tombstone seen in the accompanying photo is incorrect. He never served with the 1st Pennsylvania Infantry. He enlisted at the overstated age of twenty-one in West Chester, Chester County, June 10, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Baltimore, Maryland, July 26 as a private with Co. I, 1st Pennsylvania Reserves (30th Pennsylvania Infantry). Wounded at the battle of Fredericksburg on December 13, 1862, he was admitted to Finley U.S. Hospital, Washington DC, and transferred to a Philadelphia medical facility in late January 1863. During the first half of 1864, he was detached to the provost guard and honorably discharged at term's end June 13, 1864.

His marital situation is a bit cloudy. It appears he married Mary Kathryn lnu. and fathered Zuliema "Zulie" (b. 05/17/69 - married Charles Vogelsong) and Ellen (b. @1887 - married H. P. Calvert). Mary died in 1890, and he married Eva T. Kennedy, fathering Lillian R. (b. 01/05/98 - married D. Earl McCurdy). In 1890, he was living in Harrisburg, Dauphin County, where he died from a "cerebral hemorrhage".
