Born in New Haven Connecticut, he was a son of Austrian immigrants, Jacob (1884-1974) and Anna (née Wenig) Schiff (1889-1976). Irwin was the youngest child of the household. He was the author of numerous books regarding economics and Federal Income Tax. His son, Peter Schiff, is a well known financial analyst, stockbroker and author who ran for the United States Senate Republican nomination in Connecticut in 2010. Schiff was serving a 13-plus year sentence for tax crimes at the time of his death. The Federal Bureau of Prisons reported that Schiff died on October 16, 2015. Mr. Schiff had been in prison for 10 years and was diagnosed in August 2015 with terminal lung cancer. His son, Peter, campaigned unsuccessfully to allow his father to die with his family, rather than in the U.S. prison system.
