Sara M. Bennett, age 86, died May 20, 2013 at her home in Sikeston, Missouri.

Mrs. Bennett was born July 12, 1926 in the farming community of New Holland, Ohio to the late James and Ora (Roberts) Helsel. She graduated from New Holland High School and moved to Sikeston, Missouri in 1955. She graduated from Southeast Missouri State University with a degree in Elementary Education and was hired by Sikeston Public Schools as an elementary teacher – spending her career teaching the third grade at Lee Hunter Elementary.

On July 27, 1946 she married Dr. R B. Bennett; he preceded her in death May 14, 1999.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, first United Methodist Church Women, a member of the Philathea Sunday School Class, and chairwoman of the Bereavement Meal Community for a number of years.

She enjoyed preparing food for other people, playing bridge and traveling. She enjoyed several trips within the United States borders as well as trips to other countries.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald Helsel and Walter Lee Helsel; and her identical twin sister, Clara Posey. Survivors include two brothers and sisters-in-law, Gerald & Pat Helsel and Jim & Dee Helsel; several nieces and nephews; and one Goddaughter, Lee Ann Beck, who lovingly and patiently took care of her throughout her illness.

Friends may call Thursday, May 23, from 4:00 p.m. until time of funeral services at 6:00 p.m. at Ponder Funeral Home. Rev. Geoff Posegate, pastor of First United Methodist Church, will officiate.

Mrs. Bennett will be buried in the Helsel Family Plot of the New Holland Cemetery in New Holland, Ohio.
