In 1949, John Arthur retired due to poor health and the store was turned over to his sons Floyd and Howard. John and Susan moved to Hot Springs, Arkansas for a few months, then to Lubbock, Texas. Susan got a job in the cafeteria at Lubbock Memorial Hospital and continued working there until 1960.
Two of their seven children died in infancy, Horace Eugene Eaves and J. P. Eaves. The other five children were Floyd Arthur, Loyd Howard, Billie Sue, Pansy Rae and Joseph Neil Eaves.
