A telegram received from the war department Tuesday by Mr. and Mrs. Addison Dashner of Gouverneur RD5, informed them that their son, Pvt Merton D. Dashner, who was reported as missing Mar 3 in Italy is now listed as having died in action on that date.
Pvt Dashner went into the service in February 1943. He was sent overseas in June 1943. He landed in Africa and took part in the invasion of Sicily and Italy. He was wounded October 15, 1943, and remained in a hospital until Jan 22, 1944 when he was released.
Before he entered service he worked in a feed and grain mill at DeKalb Junction.

Funeral services with full military rites for Pvt Merton Douglas Dashner, 19, Fowler, son of Mr and Mrs. Addison Dashner, who was killed in Italy in March 1944, were conducted from teh Sprague Funeral home last Saturday afternoon at 2:30. Rev. Harold A. Thomas, pastor of the First Methodist church officiated and interment was made in Fullerville.
Honor guards of the Gouverneur American Legion and V.F.W. met the body at the depot when it arrived in Gouverneur and accompanied it to the Sprague parlors.
Private Dashner was a member of the U.S. Infantry and was killed in combat in March 1944, two months after returning to action following wounds sustained in the Italian campaign on October 15, 1943.
A native of Fowler, Private Dashner was born May 10, 1924, the son of Addision and Verna Belle Durham Dashner. He is survived by his parents, his paternal grandfather, Andrew Dashner, three step-brothers and two step-sisters.
