Two more of Gouverneur's war dead were returned to the village last week and teh community's ex-servicemen provided full military rites. They were T/Sgt Frank Anthony French, son of Tony French, 12 Church St. and Sgt Glenn K. Hess, son of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn W. Hess, Gravel Rd.
The remains of the two veterans were met at the NYCRR station at 6:45pm Friday by an American Legion and VFW honor guard. The Hess casket was removed to the parents home, the French casket to the American Legion Home. Village flags were half-masted.
Sergeant Hess was born in the town of Gouverneur August 9, 1925, the son of Glenn and Audre Murton Hess. He was salutatorian of the 1943 graduating class, active in athletics and extra-curricular activities while in school.
He entered the service in August 1943 after graduation from Gouverneur High School. He was later assigned to Carnegie Tech to take engineering courses under teh Army Specialized Training program.
Sergeant Hess was a member of the 95th division of the Third army at the time he was killed in action at Metz Germany, Nov 16, 1944.
Surviving are his parents, a grandmother, Mrs. Martha Hiss; and a sister, Miss Marlene Hess, student at Gouverneur High School.
Full military rites were observed Sunday afternoon. A private prayer service was held from the home at 1:30 followed by services at the First Methodist church, with Rev. Harold A. Thomas, pastor and Rev. Wesley Baker of Pine View officiating. Burial was in Hailesboro cemetery.
