Sgt Bernard H. Blackmer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hazen Blackmer of Route 1, Canton, was killed in action in Italy on Feb 9th, according to a telegram received by his parents over the weekend form the War Department, with letters and further information as it was received to follow. The message of the War Department had the usual signature, Major General A. J. Ulio, adjunct general. The message was brief, recounting the mere detail of death of the soldier in action, but not recounting the locale.
Sergeant Blackmer was with General Mark W. Clark's Fifth Army in Italy and had experienced the thrills in the days of swift moving battle that followed the penetration of the Fifth Army, and was with the assaulting division that dislodged the Germans from the Volturno River battle front. He served in North Africa prior to the Italian Invasion.
His last letter home was Feb 2, written to his fiancee, Miss Shirley Sawyer of Elmira, formerly of Canton.
Sergeant Blackmer was inducted into service on Jan 27, 1943, by Gouverneur Board No 415. He registered for selective service from Richville. After entering the service he never had a furlough to his home in St. Lawrence County. Before entering service he was employed at the plant of the Aluminum Co of America at Massena.
He received his first training at Camp Croft, SC. He left for overseas lst June from a Virginia port of embarkment. He left the US as a private and was later advanced to corporal and then to sergeantcy. While in service overseas he had a period of illness from jaundice last September, but fully recovered and returned to active duty.
He was born in Pierrepont Sept 30, 1923, son of Hazen and Anna Blackmer. He attended district schools and Pyrites Union School.
He leaves besides his parents, three sisters, Mrs. Donald Gardner of Elmira; Mrs. Theodore Burnette of Gouverneur; and Miss Geneva Blackmer of Canton. There are two brothers, Allen and Erwin, also at home, and his grandfather, David Blackmer, living a the advanced age of 87 years at Pierrepont.
