Lenita Jasamyn Garrett
Funeral services were held Saturday, August 20, 1983 for Mrs. Lenita Jasamyn Garrett of Paris, Tennessee at 1:00 p.m. in the United Methodist Church in Hayti. Rev. John Ray of Hayti officiated the service for Mrs. Garrett, a former Hayti resident. Burial was in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Hayti.
Mrs. Garrett was born in Hayti on July 19, 1908 and passed away in Memphis on Wednesday, August 17, 1983 at the age of 75 years and 28 days.
She was a graduate of Stephens College and of George Peabody College in Nashville where she received a bachelor of Science degree.
Mrs. Garrett had coached girl's basketball, taught speech and drama for 40 years, been active in civic and church affairs, judged and advised for a number of beauty pagaents and wrote columns for the Commercial Appeal in Memphis and the National Thespian magazine. She wrote and published Bountiful Bootheel Borning, a 244 page hardbound book telling in narrative verse the history of the Missouri Bootheel country. Mrs. Garrett moved to Paris, Tennessee in July 1981, where she directed the Paris-Henry County Arts Council's dinner plays "Arsenic and Old Lace" and "See How They Run."
She was the daughter of the late Albert Guy and Vada Proffer Sanders. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Hayti.
On August 28, 1942, she was united in marriage to Virgil O. Garrett and to this union was born two sons.
Mrs. Garrett leaves the following to mourn her passing: her husband, Virgil O. (Peck) Garrett of Lake Orion, Michigan and Dr. Glen Garrett of Paris and 3 grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
Pallbearers were Fred Chaffin, Sam Wallace, Noah Barkovitz, Byron Tinsley, Glen Pery, Duane Michie, Shester Dillard, and Groy Grissom.
John W. German Funeral Home in Hayti was in charge of services.
