Kenneth was a veteran of the Mexican War. He served with Captain Thomas Jones' regiment (Company B Gilpin's Missouri Mounted Volunteers). Descendents state he also served during the Civil War and was wounded (a cannon blast which left him deaf and half blind) during the battle of Springfield on 8 Jan 1863.

He married Polly Swearingen 30 Nov 1848 and had seven children (six sons). About 1877, he married Agnes Allen and had six more children (five sons).
