The Little Dog Angels
High up in the courts of heaven today two little dog angels wait;
With the other angels they will not play, but they sit alone at the gates.
"For we know our master will come" says they, "and when he comes he will call for us."
The other angels pass them by as they hurry toward the throne,
And they watch them with wistful eyes as they sit at the gates alone.
"But we know if we just wait patiently that someday our master will call for us."
And their master, down on earth below, as he sits in his easy chair,
Forgets sometimes, and whispers low to the dogs who are not there.
And the little dog angels cock their ears and dream that their master's voice they hear.
And when at last their master waits outside in the dark and cold,
For the hand of death to open the door that leads to those courts of gold,
He will hear a sound through the gathering dark,
The little dog angels bark.
