She married Elihu Maxwell and they had three sons, four daughters, and six other children together between 1864 and 1882. After Elihu Maxwell died on May 21, 1887, in Lowell, Arkansas, at the age of 63, Mary E. Hatfield then married [George?] Hardwick on July 26, 1888, in Missouri. She was widowed again, sometime between 1900 and 1910. As of 1900, 7 of her 13 children were deceased. Another had died by 1910. She died on October 15, 1927, in Warner, Oklahoma, at the age of 80. Her known children are:
