He was the son of Sarah B Kirkland and George P H Pickett.

Served in the Confederate Army, Company E, 61st Alabama Regiment, and Company E, 59th Alabama Regiment, first as Private and then 3rd Sergeant. Prisoner of war at Point Lookout, Maryland. Blind in left eye, as a result of wounds.
