He enlisted in the Marine Corps and upon his discharge returned to New York where he entered the insurance industry, first working with his father Robert then opening his own firm, Donald B. Blaikie & Company, which ultimately became The Blaikie Group. He remained in that business for 40 years, retiring in 2000.
For the past 14 years he spent his time with his wife and extended family at his homes in San Diego and Borrego Springs, California where he enjoyed off-roading, tennis, golf and entertaining. Don was an avid athlete who was proud to say that he ran and completed two NYC marathons, his last at age 65.
Don was instrumental in revitalizing the golf course at Rams Hill Country Club in Borrego Springs which reopened this week. It is unfortunate that he will not be able to enjoy the fruits of his hard work in that area, but his family takes solace in the fact that so many others will.
He is survived by his loving wife Sandra, his four children, Jennifer, Nick, Peter and Dana; son-in-law Larry, daughter-in-law Emily; his most beloved grandchildren, Magda, Sophie, Henry, Joe and Bailey; his brother Robert P. Blaikie as well as his step children Rob, Christine and Scott; his loving extended family Jeff, Amy and Jordan, their spouses and children and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
‘He was the quintessential New Yorker’
