James F. Aylward of Walla Walla, died Monday, Sept. 8, 2014 at Odd Fellows Home.
Jim was raised in Walla Walla and graduated in 1946 from Wa-Hi. He graduated from WSU with a degree in business administration and economics. He was married to Mary Jane Little in 1950, who preceded him in death in 1990. A man tall in giving of self as well as in stature, Jim demise at age 85 marks the passing of a man whose wit as well as achievements and personality will long be remembered.
He was in the Air Force and the Reserves. Then he returned to Walla Walla and was employed by Sherwood & Roberts. In 1980, Jim was named president of the board of directors and chief operating officer. His mantra: "Actually, we have only one product, and that is SERVICE."
In the early 80's Jim and Mary Jane moved to Weston, Mass., where he served as president and chief executive officer of Investors Mortgage Insurance Company, and also became president of the MBA (Mortgage Bankers Association of America). 1979 –1987, he was president of the Board of Regents of Gonzaga University.
A popular speaker, with a quick sense of humor, he frequently challenged business leaders by not only reviewing the economic climate but also by encouraging them to provide viability and leadership in the world of mortgage banking.
Jim was a trustee of the Sherwood Trust in Walla Walla, a $30 million charitable trust with ties to Whitman College.
Featured in the May 1979 issue of "WSU Hilltopics," Jim said he was a "common man." The writer responded, "If he is, he has done some uncommon things."
He was a member of St. Patrick's Church. He married Joyce Wheeler in 1992 and they spent half of each year in Walla Walla and the other half in Borrego Springs, Calif. They were members of the de Anza Country Club and Walla Walla Country Club. Jim was an avid, if not great, golfer.

He is also survived by his step children, Brad (Pam) Wheeler of Tualatin, Ore., Cindy (James) Richman of Spokane, Becky (Don) Alvarez of Scottsdale, Ariz., and 12 grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. Daughter, Mary Beth Aylward, a resident of the Yakima Valley School of the Retarded, preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held at Assumption Catholic Church on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2014, at 10 a.m. with burial services and military honors to follow at Mountain View Cemetery and a memorial reception at the Walla Walla Country Club following the burial. All friends of Jim are welcome. In addition, there will be a public viewing & visitation on Friday, Sept. 12, 2014, from 1 – 6 p.m. at the Herring Funeral Home Chapel.
