In Loving Memory of Harrison Rich Baker Jr. April 10,1925 -Jan. 25, 2006.
Retired real estate developer and appraiser, died in Sequim, Washington of respiratory failure at the age of 80. He was born and raised in Pasadena, California, the only child of Harrison R. and Grace (McCormick) Baker. He attended Pasadena Junior College and received his Bachelor's degree from Saint Thomas University in Saint Paul, Minnesota, followed by studies at Harvard School of Business. He married Joanna Clark Lee in Minneapolis, Minnesota June 7, 1947. A Naval lieutenant during World Wa r JJ and the Korean War, he served as an aviation supply officer aboard aircraft carriers in both the Pacific and European theaters. Baker was awarded a Presidential unit citation during the Korean conflict. Baker spent his career in real estate development and as president of Davis-Baker Realtors and Developers in Pasadena, CA He was involved in appraising and consulting in Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties in California and was frequently called as an expert witness for the state of California. In that capacity, with his stellar verbal skills and dramatic flair, he took great pride in never losing a case. A partner of Baker-Marlow Co., Baker was instrumental in development of numerous Southern California properties. Baker's civic activities included presidencies of the Los Angeles chapter #1, International Society of Real Estate Appraisers and of the Covina Valley Board of Realtors. He was former secretary-treasurer of the California State Inheritance Tax Referee Association, held a Senior Right-of - Way designation with the American Right -of- Way Association, a Senior Real Estate Analyst designation with the Society of Real Estate Appraisers, and was an MAI designated Appraiser. He was active with the Pasadena chamber of commerce, Pasadena Realty board, Pasadena University Club, and the Salvation Army. Baker was a past Master of the Carmelita Masonic Lodge # 599 F & M, of Pasadena; a member of the Consistory Scottish Rite; of Montecito Covenant Church of Santa Barbara, CA; and of Lambda Alpha economic fraternity. In addition to Pasadena, Baker resided in Borrego Springs, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Avalon on Catalina Island, and Santa Barbara, all in CA; Kona, Hawaii; and Sequim, Washington. He also enjoyed traveling extensively with his wife. His proudest accomplishment was being elected and serving as the 89th president of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses. His election was the culmination of 29 years of service to the association. In that role, he initiated plans for both the Rose Parade and the 64th Rose Bowl football game held on Monday, January 2, 1978, with the theme "On the Road to Happiness." He thoroughly enjoyed hosting his Grand Marshal, President Gerald Ford, for the festivities. Baker's favorite activities included traveling the world on at least 3 meals a day and never being without a cup of coffee. He loved talking, laughing, and being a friend to nearly everyone he met. With a tremendous appetite for life, he greatly impacted all whose lives crossed his path. He loved his wife of 59 years above all else and was an adored father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Baker is survived by wife Joanna; daughters Sharon Cameron and Wendy B. Offield, daughter and son-in-law Pam and Scott Werner; ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Services: Monday, February 6, at 12 noon: Memorial and interment at Pacific View Memorial Park, 3500 Pacific View Dr., Newport Beach, CA 92625.
