Frank served in the artillery in the 45th Infantry Division. When he enlisted, they insisted upon a middle name for the records, despite the fact that he did not have one. Frank gave them 'Amapalla' for a middle name, that being the title of a song he liked.

During fighting in Italy, Frank's unit was positioned at a location where they occasionally had to cross by jeep through an area that was targeted by German artillery. During one of these crossings, Frank was killed when the jeep he was in got stuck and was hit by the German artillery.

After initially being interred in Italy, Frank's body was exhumed and returned to Oklahoma, where he was laid to rest.
