Orville Camdon Coppenbarger

Orville Camdon Coppenbarger, 94, Arkansas city, died Sunday (Nov. 4, 2001) at the Kansas Veteran's Home in Winfield.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday (Nov. 7, 2001) at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home in Arkansas City with Rev. Buddy Cook officiating. Interment will be in the Hope cemetery in Arkansas City.

Born Jan. 27, 1907, he was the son of Charles and Agnes (Seanor) Coppenbarger in Geuda Springs. His schooling was through eighth grade at Geuda Springs, high school at Bresee Nazerene School in Hutchinson, a year at Kansas State University, a year at Ark City Junior college and a year at Philippine University in Manila.

On June 1, 1935, he married Roberta M. Ford in Arkansas City and the couple had two daughters. They divorced and he married Helen McBurnett in Wichita on July 3, 1969.

Orville began his career at Stearmen, moved to Travel Air Company and then to Beech in 1935. Prior to that time, he served in the Army Air Corps in Shanghai, China and in the Philippine Islands for three years. Orville received his private pilot's license in 1929 and during WWII, he was commander of the Beech Squdron of the Civil Air Patrol. He was a welder at Beech Aircraft for 37 years until his retirement in 1973.

He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Arkansas City, the board of directors and Beech Credit Union and charter member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, Local No. 733.

Survivors include his daughters, Jeannette Reeves of Summerville, S.C., and Karen J. Pappan of Winfield, Stepsons, Mike McBurnett of Hanover, Ind., and Randy McBurnett of Houston, Texas, five grandchildren, Gilbert Reeves and Jennie Sue Reeves, both of Summerville, S.C., Kimberly K. Tatum of Burden, Kevin M. Pappan of Winfield and Kelly L. Pappan of Wichita, Five step grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Helen, brother, Clayton Coppenbarger, and an infant sister.

Memorials have been established with the Kansas Veteran's Home in Winfield.
