Professor Jean Bernard was born in Paris and graduated in medicine there in 1926. He trained at the Pasteur Institute in 1929 and became a professor of haematology and director of the Institute for Leukaemia at the University of Paris for many years. During the German occupation of France, he was active in the French resistance and was taken prisoner by the Nazis. In 1983, he became president of Académie des Sciences de l'Institut de France. Dead, at the age of 98, in Paris.
