Newton Carrell was born on a farm near Summerville, in Chattooga county, GA, to Peter & Louisa Carroll. (In the Carroll families, members used either the Carroll/Carrell spelling.) He was the 8th child born out of 17 children. Sadly, 9 of his siblings died as infants or at a young age. After his mother died, his father married Emily West. He had 2 half-sisters and 1 half-brother from his father's second marriage. Newton became a printer and after 1870, he moved to New York, where he married Martha Hallock and raised his family. Their son, Thomas was named after Newton's brother Thomas, and their children Theodora and Horace were named after one of Newton's half-sisters and his half-brother.
