A. F. Marten first came to San Francisco, California in 1915 for the Panama-Pacific Exposition to create decorative works for German exhibitors. He quickly established himself as a highly sought after furniture maker and interior designer and even gave extensive lectures on the topic. In 1923 Marten opened his own firm located at 1501 Sutter Street in San Francisco aptly named the A. F. Marten Company, which was in business until he voluntarily liquidated in early 1936 and returned to Germany to be with his wife and children. Marten had never attained American citizenship. The most important commissions the company completed were the designing and manufacturing of all the furnishings and interior decoration for the luxury passenger liners s/s President Hoover and s/s President Coolidge in 1929-31 for the Dollar Steamship Line.
