Organized Labor Figure. Serving as a Sergeant in an engineers regiment during World War One, he was working as a longshoreman in San Francisco when in 1934 he took part in the San Francisco General Strike with the International Longshoreman's Association. On July 5, 1934, known today as Bloody Thursday, the strike turned violent when police opened fire on the strikers. Sperry and fellow striker Nick Bordoise were both shot and killed during the battle and were later given large funerals by the strikers.
