1895 Iowa Census lists a John McLaughlin, born abt 1842 living in Cherokee County First Ward. (city of Cherokee) They list his state of birth as Massachusetts.

OLD SOLDIER PASSES AWAY
John McLaughlin, after an illness lasting several years died at his home Thursday afternoon.
Mr. McLaughlin enlisted Nov. 10, 1851 in Company A, l5th Iowa Infantry and was discharged for disability April 26, 1862.
Shortly after he left the war he came to Cherokee county and was married to Amanda Wade who died several years ago.
Funeral was held Saturday morning interment, in the Catholic Cemetery. He is survived by several children.

ANOTHER VETERAN HAS CROSSED OVER
John McLaughlin, a pioneer citizen of Cherokee and civil war veteran, died at his home at 3 o'clock on Thursday last Funeral services were held on Saturday and were in charge of Guster Post G. A. R.
The deceased is survived by three daughters and one son. They are Mrs. Grace Geslund, Martha and Warren McLaughlin of Cherokee and Mrs. Ida Robinson, who could not be located.
When last heard of the family had moved from Council Bluffs to Avoca, Iowa.
