GREENSBORO- Thomas Sandy Alston, known to family and friends as "T. S. Tommy, Sandy, Tom," died Thursday, Aug. 18, 2005, at Moses Cone Hospital.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Grace Lutheran Church with interment following in Guilford Memorial Park.

He was born in Kannapolis, Cabarrus County in 1929 to Stuart and Hattie Mozella Alston. Thomas graduated from George Washington Carver High School in Kannapolis in June 1947. He was a member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Kannapolis. He was inducted into the Armed Forces of the United States in February 1951 and served as PFC First Class, ERC Infantry, Third Army Area, Company A 95th Infantry Battalion. He transferred to the Army Reserve in February 1953 and received an Honorable Discharge from the Army in October 1956. He attended The Agricultural and Technical College of North Carolina [University]and received a bachelor of science in business administration. Thomas received a certificate in The Management Development Program at Guilford Technical Institute in Jamestown. Thomas married Willie Mae Shoffner of Liberty on April 9, 1957, and had five children.

He had been a long standing member of Grace Lutheran Church in Greensboro. Thomas has served numerous roles at the church to make sure things operated efficiently and effectively. T.S. always had a broad smile, a hearty laughter, a calm disposition, a heart full of warmth with a willingness to serve and always went the extra mile. On numerous occasions in the rain, sleet and snow, he would deliver taped sermons, food, supplies and provide needed support services to others even when he was not feeling his best. He did this to the end of life. Thomas' guiding principles of dedication, commitment, exemplary character and strong work ethic were evident in the jobs and careers with the U.S. Postal Service, Watkins Products, Vicks Manufacturing Company and Guilford County Schools.
