Ira William Allen, 82, of 724 Hogan Road, has been called home by the angels, Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002, at Moses Cone Hospital.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, 2002, at Lambeth-Troxler Funeral Service Chapel, conducted by the Revs. Avon Craven, Ron Freeman and Douglas Allen. Burial will be in Guilford Memorial Park, with military graveside rites performed by VFW Post 11533.

He passed away on his favorite day of the month, the 13th. Ira witnessed to his great faith whenever anyone asked why the 13th was special to him, he quickly explained that on the 13th he found his salvation. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many.

Mr. Allen was born Jan. 2, 1920, to Willie Coleman Allen and Annie Elliott Allen, Schoolfield, Va. He attended Franklin Springs Bible College, and was a lifelong member of the State Street Church of God. He dutifully served his country during World War II, as an Army Ranger, under the British Commando unit in Europe and Africa. Mr. Allen started working with Esso Corp., in 1959, and continued working as an Exxon dealer until 1998. He was well known as a faithful man of God and for witnessing his faith to others. A son, Ira W. Allen Jr., preceded him in death.

Survivors are his wife of 57 years, Evelyn Drum Allen; sons, Phil Allen and wife, Lynda, Barry Allen and wife, Judy; sisters, Clarice Powell and Christine Sibley; brother, Douglas Allen and wife, Flo; grandchildren, Derek Allen and wife, Pam, Brad Allen, Dana Allen and Deron Allen; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at the home of Barry Allen, 5101 Edinborough Road, Greensboro.

Memorial donations may be made, in memory of Mr. Allen, to Samaritans Purse, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, N.C. 28607.
