Marvin Kent Powers, 70, of Patriot, died Thursday, April 14, 2016, at his residence.

He was born July 27, 1945, in Biloxi, Miss., to James Selby and Olevia Marjorie “Libby” Hardin Powers. He was raised in Shelbyville, where he was a 1964 graduate of Shelbyville High School. He attended the Indianapolis Mortuary College. He served in the Army from Sept. 14, 1964 to Aug. 31, 1967, rising to the rank of rank of Specialist 5th Class, serving during the Vietnam War. He was employed with Laughery Gravel. He was a production worker for Campbell Hausfeld in Harrison, Ohio, for 10 years; General Electric in Evendale, Ohio, for four years; KECO in Florence, Ky., for six years; GAP Inc. in Hebron, Ky., for six years; and Adidas in Hebron, Ky., for two years. He was employed at Grand Victoria Casino in Rising Sun for three years. He was most recently employed at Walmart in Aurora. He had resided in Switzerland County since 1973, and the past 39 years in Patriot. He was a member of Rising Sun Post 59 of the American Legion. He attended Concord Community Church in Patriot. He enjoyed building furniture, woodworking, fishing, working in flower beds, coloring, cooking and spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah Elaine “Debbie” Rush Powers, whom he married Dec. 21, 1974; one son, Mike Powers of Patriot; one daughter, Carrie Ann Powers of Burlington, Ky.; one brother, James L. Powers of Franklin; three grandchildren; two nephews; and one niece.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one niece.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home in Vevay. Burial will be in Concord Cemetery in Patriot. Military honors will be conducted graveside by Rising Sun Post 59 of the American Legion.

Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Concord Community Church or the Switzerland County Animal Shelter Endowment Fund. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.
