Matilda was born in Georgia to Paulina Pope and Henry Pope. She was married to William Rogers which was terminated. She migrated to New York in 1900 and ran a boarding house in Far Rockaway, New York.

In 1913 she, her mother and her adopted daughter Selena left New York for Los Angeles, California. She lived in Los Angeles for 35 years.

Matilda died from bladder cancer. Her condition was aggravated by an automobile accident caused by a hit and run driver while crossing Imperial Highway in Los Angeles, California while returning from food shopping. Her hip was broken in the automobile accident. She was living with her adopted daughter Selena Mary Rogers Walton at the time of her death. Her condition never improved and she was bedridden until her death in 1948. Her daughter Mary was at her bedside.
