After 84 wonderful years, Chester Alva Rose, Jr., of Charlotte, N.C., and Charlottesville, Va., was peacefully called home to Jesus on the Tuesday, April 7, 2015.He was born in Greensboro, N.C., on July 17, 1930 to Chester A. Rose Sr. and Ennis Strupe.

He was preceded in death by his first wife of nearly 52 years, Jean Sharp Rose, who died in 2003, his second wife of 8 years, Nancy Borchardt Rose, who died in February 2015; and a son, Chester A. Rose III, who died in 1957.

Mr. Rose is survived by a daughter, Deb Krahn and her husband, Norm, and their daughters, Emily and Sarah-Jean of Edmonton, Alberta; a daughter, Mindy Eichorn and her husband, Bill, and their three sons, Robert, Jace, and Bill along with his wife, Shannon, and their two sons, Liam and Henry, of Charlotte, N.C.; a daughter, Susan Sheild and her husband, George, and their two daughters, Katie and Ellie, and son, Cabell, of Charlotte, N.C.; a son, Bryan, of Amhurst County, Va.; a sister, Margaret Wagner and her husband, Don, of Afton, Va. and their three children and families. He is also survived by two step-children, David Borchardt and Kerri Taylor, and their families, from Charlottesville, Va.; and close friends from all over the country.

Mr. Rose was an Eagle Scout, Quartermaster Sea Scout, and a graduate of Guilford College in Greensboro, N.C., Class of 1951. He was awarded the Guilford Alumni Excellence Award in 1980 for outstanding achievement in his chosen field of endeavor. He also graduated from Officer Candidate School at the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn., and was proud of his service during the Korean Conflict as a Deck Officer on a Coast Guard Cutter assigned to aids-to-navigation and search-and-rescue duty off the coast of New England.

Following military service, Mr. Rose was an honor graduate of the three-year Financial Management Program at General Electric Company. His career at GE included positions as Division Statistician of the Chemical and Metallurgical Division in Pittsfield, Mass.; Traveling Auditor, Audit Administrator, and Manager of the Audit Program and Personnel Administration of the elite GE Corporate Audit Staff in Schenectady, N.Y.; Manager of Finance of the Communication Systems Business Division in Lynchburg, Va.; Manager of Financial Manpower Operation at the corporate headquarters in New York City; and Vice President of the Finance of Canadian General Electric Company, Ltd. as well as founding CEO of its subsidiary finance company, Genelcan, Ltd. in Toronto, Ontario and a Director of Dominion Engineering, Ltd., a manufacturer of papermaking machines, waterwheel generators, and earthmoving equipment in Montreal, Quebec.

For several years, he taught the Auditing course in GE's Financial Management Program and worked on the professional career development of young people with exceptional potential, later watching with pride as many of them became leaders and officers at GE and numerous other companies. He subsequently became Vice President and Controller and Chief Security Officer of Union Pacific Corporation in New York City, where he also was a member of the Marco Polo Club. Additionally, he was Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Burlington Northern, Inc. in St. Paul, Minn. and a member of the Rainier Club in Seattle, Wash.

Mr. Rose had been a member of the Institute of Internal Auditors, the National Association of Accountants, the American Accounting Association, and was a Life Member of the Financial Executives Institute. He had been a Rotarian and a member of Lions and Optimist Clubs in various locations. He also was a member of the Advisory Board of the School of Accounting at the University of Southern California, and served as an Executive on Campus at Iowa State University and as the Chairman of Development Committee and Alumni Board at his alma mater, Gilford College in Greensboro, N.C. He also presided over the Advisory Board of Visitors for one term as Chairman and spent two terms as a Trustee of Mary Baldwin College, where two of his daughters were students, in Staunton, Va.

After retirement, he enjoyed working on his golf game, studying his family genealogy, was the managing partner of an executive search firm, worked as a consultant installing cash management systems in several major companies under license from GE, and assisted an inventor in augmenting his discoveries of how to combine various metal atoms with carbon 64 molecules to create new materials with previously unknown strength and hardness.

In Schenectady, N.Y., Mr. Rose was both a co-leader at First Methodist church and a Treasurer of the Girl Scout Council. He was also a member of the board at the Fine Arts Center and of the Boy Scout Council Board in Lynchburg, Va. He enjoyed many years of quality time with his family, which involved traveling with his wife, Jean, beach vacations with his grandchildren, and countless hours playing his favorite card game.

His family describes him as well-read, a walking dictionary, a crossword aficionado, and a proud and dedicated man of integrity who loved his Lord, family, and country.
