Dr. Raymond T Copeland, 89, died on / at:
• Saturday, October 15, 2011
• Moses Cone Hospital

A graveside service was held at Guilford Memorial Park at 1:30 pm Sunday, October 23, 2011 followed by a Memorial Service at College Place United Methodist Church, 509 Tate Street Greensboro, with Rev. Jason Harvey and Rev. Robert Smith officiating, at 2:30 pm.

Dr. Copeland was born in Alamance County, moving to Greensboro at a very young age with his family.

He attended Greensboro Senior High School, then pursued his life-long ambition to become a veterinarian by attending UNC-CH for premedical studies prior to acceptance by the University of Georgia School of Veterinary Medicine, Athens, Georgia from which he graduated in 1953 with a degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. He took special courses at NC State, the University of Kentucky and Roanoke College.

Following a five year partnership with Dr. French Wise, he built and operated Animal Hospital on Pleasant Garden Road for 32 years. In 1985 he sold his small animal practice and operated a large animal practice from Lo-Ray Farm on McConnell Road, limited mostly to equine, until his retirement in 1990.

Through the years, Dr. Copeland was an avid birddog owner, breeder and hunter, participating in field trials, judging, and developed with Clyde McManus a judges' rule book for the US Complete Shooting Dog Association. He acquired a love for horses at a very young age and always owned several head which he enjoyed riding and breeding. His dedication to the treatment and welfare of all animals, small and large, was documented by a large clientele following.

He was a Charter Member of the After Hours Veterinary Emergency Clinic, a Life Member of the NC Veterinary Medical Association, an Honor Roll Member of the American Association of Equine Practitioners and was a Past President of the NC Veterinary Research Foundation.

He was a Life Member of Greensboro Elks Lodge No. 602, Life Member of Forest Oaks Country Club and former member of the Sedgefield Hunt Club.

As a member of College Place United Methodist Church, he served twice as a Trustee, once as Chair, a delegate to the Western NC Conference, a member and President of the Cornerstone Class, and was involved in many other projects. He also served for a while as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels.

A veteran of World War II, he served with the Eighth Air Force in England. He was returned home on a hospital ship due to developing rheumatoid arthritis contracted there, rendering him inability to walk and spending several years recuperating in and out of Army hospitals.

Surviving Dr. Copeland are wife, Lorena Holden Copeland, sons, Ruffin H. Copeland from Charlotte; Russell T. Copeland (Lisa); four grandchildren, Andrew, Zachary, Madison and Morgan of Gainesville, Georgia; sister, Dorothy C. Fremd and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by parents Decima and Broadie Copeland and brother, B. N. Copeland Jr.
