Mary Lloys Rice Himes of Ringgold, Georgia, died on Tuesday, October 4, 2011, at her residence at Southern Oaks Assisted Living, Chattanooga.
Mary Lloys was preceded in death by both parents, Dr. John R. and Lloys Rice, her husband of 56 years, Charles Himes, her brother-in-law and sister, Allan and Grace MacMullen, and her brother-in-law, Bill Rice.
Mary Lloys was born June 27, 1925. She graduated from Wheaton College in 1947 with a bachelor's degree in anthropology. She married Charles Himes, also a graduate of Wheaton, in 1945. Mary Lloys served with her husband, Chuck, in pastorates in Kansas, Illinois, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Colorado, Nebraska, Missouri, and Georgia.
Mary Lloys taught on every level from elementary school to high school to college—piano to English. She was known as a gifted Bible teacher, ending with a class at Creekside at Shallowford, speaker for women's groups at churches and Joyful Woman Jubilees, author of a weekly column called Kids Corner for the Sword of the Lord for many years, and a monthly column for the Joyful Woman magazine.
She ministered to women in at a crisis pregnancy center. She was hostess and seamstress, extraordinaire. She loved people, never finding someone she could not talk to. She loved talking to them about her Lord.
She was a member of Grace Baptist Church on Shallowford Road, Chattanooga.
She is survived by five children, Murray and Lloys Jean Himes Grace of Cincinnati, Ohio, and daughter, Amy; Faith Himes Lamb of Chattanooga, and children, Bill and Elizabeth Lamb Catoe of Chattanooga, Stephen Lamb of Nashville, John and Rachel Lamb of Chattanooga, Sarah and Daniel Roberts of Atlanta, Andrew Lamb of Seattle; Andy and Alix Wilber Himes of Seattle, and daughter Amber and Dave Cornell and their daughter Chiara, John and Patty Himes of Hokkaido, Japan, and son Paul of Wake Forest, N. C., and Joanna Himes Murphy of Cincinnati and children, Virginia, Christopher, and John Andrew.
She is also survived by her beloved sisters and their husbands, Walt and Libby Handford of Greenville, S.C., Don and Jessie Sandberg of Rossville, Joanna Rice of Ringgold, and Roger and Joy Martin of Ringgold.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 8, at 10:30 a.m., in the South Crest Chapel. Interment will be at the Bill Rice Ranch in Murfreesboro with a brief graveside service at 2:30 p.m. CST.
