The Civil War broke out when Alonzo was almost 7, and his family escaped from Virginia to Ohio to be free of the Confederate army who were looking for Alonzo's father who had deserted after a month of enforced enlistment as he vowed loyalty to the Union army but was later not accepted for enlistment in Ohio. "When Lon Poling was nearly grown, he went to Chicago, where he stayed a short time before moving to Kansas. He was teaching in a sod schoolhouse there in the early eighties, when the yearning for adventure struck him.
"'My existence was just too quiet,'" he said. "'When it was announced that Oklahoma would be opened for settlement April 22, 1889, I decided I'd be there.'
"When [E.D.] Nix became United States marshal, Poling was the first deputy to take the oath of office. Nix swore in 100 deputies, whose avowed purpose was to rid Oklahoma of the gangs of gunmen who infested the hills in the eastern part of the state.
"'It amounted virtually to a civil war,'" Poling recalled. "'We hunted and fought in packs, and the outlaws waged open warfare on us. It was a fight to the death. Either law and order had come to stay or the outlaws would rule Oklahoma. We knew it and they knew it, and both sides fought accordingly.'"...
"After 2½ years of service under Nix, Poling decided to try his luck in the opening of the Kiowa, Comanche and Apache country." He drew a quarter section near Lone Wolf which he farmed from 1901-1933, retiring to his Kiamichi home south of Wilburton on the Spanish-American War veterans' reservation, still owning the farm.
He was also in business in Bristow, and he and Joseph Eads scraped together $80 to found the Bristow Record, selling it a short time later to Hester and Green. He later volunteered for the Spanish-American war service at age 43. (para)
Alonzo's wife is the former Hattie Deweese of Indiana who has been in Oklahoma since she was 13. Her family settled near Wellston, where she met Poling. (para)
