Alexandre Vlasov (born in Novocherkassk, Russia) immigrated from Russia to Italy where he became a citizen. Vlasov entered the shipping business in the 1920s and in 1937 established the Società Italiana Trasporti Marittimi much better known by its initials as 'Sitmar.' Following the end of World War II in 1945 Vlasov entered the passenger shipping trade. Following his death in 1961 Sitmar was taken over by his son Boris (1913-1987). Sitmar later switched over to cruising and by the mid 1970s was not only a pioneer in the cruise ship industry but was one the largest companies. Sitmar was sold to Princess Cruises in 1988 was ceased to exist.
