Admiral Randall began his career at sea in 1898 and later rose to command naval auxiliary ships from 1907 to 1916. He left the navy and joined the U.S. Merchant Marine (civilian) service in 1921 when he accepted a job with the United States Line a civilian commercial shipper engaged in the transatlantic passenger trade between New York and Northern European ports. He was nicknamed 'Rescue' because of the many successful rescues at sea of shipwrecked sailors in the 1920s. Randall served as commodore of the United States Lines from January 1931 until he retired from sea service in October of 1939 and accepted a desk job with his employers. He was also in the U.S. Naval reserve service.
