Captain Hartley was actually born in Oswego Falls, New York which has since been renamed Oswego River.

Captain Herbert Hartley commanded the United States' then largest and finest ocean liner Leviathan from July 1923 until he retired in February 1928. Hartley published his autobiography titled "Home Is the Sailor" in 1955. During his 35 years at sea Captain Hartley crossed the Atlantic Ocean nearly 900 times.

Captain Hartley was married twice, first to Charlotte Adler of Jersey City, New Jersey which produced a daughter. Following the death of his first wife he met his second wife (from Opelika, Alabama) on the s/s Leviathan which produced a son in 1925.
