Calvin was a soldier for the Union, 16th Regiment Maine Infantry Volunteers during the Civil War. He survived the Battle of Antietam in Sept. 1862 but was Killed in Action on the second day of the Battle of Fredericksburg, Dec. 12, 1862.
Calvin's brother Orrin L. Gatchell was also engaged in the Battle of Fredericksburg, but they were in different units widely separated by distance. Orrin did not learn of Calvin's death until a week later.
