Soldier of the Union Army in the Civil War.

He was wounded in action at the battles of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg.
He was once captured by Confederate guerrillas in 1864, but escaped.
He was also an eyewitness of Lee's surrender to Grant at Appomattox, April 9, 1865.

Orrin and his brother Calvin Getchell both fought in the Battle Of Fredericksburg, but in different units widely separated by distance. Calvin was killed in action on the 2nd day of the battle Dec. 12, 1862. Orrin did not learn of Calvin's death until a week later.

A book titled "Orrin's Story: Patriotism and Love of Country. The Union Now and Forever" by Thomas V. and Marilyn L. Getchell, published by Telemachus Press is now available in both "e-reader" and paperback form.
