Alma Harriet was the daughter of Charles August and Franciska Charlotte (Amundsen) Anderson, the twin sister to Corah Christine (Anderson) Venable.

While growing up, Alma's family would fish in the Pacific Ocean for living. Her parents both were born in Norway and came to the United States prior to 1882.

On 30 June 1918, Alma married Jackson (Peter) Harlow Knapp the son of George Harlow Knapp and Mary (Leana) O'Lena (Overacker) Puck. From this union they had three sons: Carl Weston Knapp (1922-2003), Homer Lorin Knapp (1924-1990), and Jackson Harlow Knapp born 1928.
