"After a while you learn the subtle difference,
Between holding a hand and chaining a soul."

God mercifully unchained the soul of a beloved wife, mother and friend, for which we are truly grateful. Janet Gallagher Knapp Myles, 82, peacefully left us on August 17, 2008 due to the complications of Alzheimer's disease. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.

Janet was born to Eugene Joseph and Myrtle Dayton Gallagher on December 24, 1925, while she was raised in Erie, Pennsylvania, the family moved out west due to her father's poor health and lived on a picturesque ranch outside of Riddle, Oregon. It was there she met the first of two great loves of her life, Homer Lorin Knapp. Janet and Homer were married on October 12, 1948. They moved to Baker City, Oregon starting a family and welcoming their first three children - Laura, Cindy (Aria) and Steve. In the early 50's they moved to Portland and welcomed the back half of the pack – twins John and Mark, with Ruth as the family's exclamation point five years later.

In the early 60's Janet and Homer moved the family to Pendleton, Oregon where they resided for nearly twenty years before moving to and retiring in Bend, Oregon. Warmer climates beckoned, and they moved to Yuma, Arizona. After Homer's death, she married John Driscoll Myles in 1994.

Janet was preceded in death by her first husband Homer, and sons Mark and Steve. She is survived by her beloved husband John D. Myles of Phoenix, Arizona; daughters Laura (Alex) Piliaris of Olympia; Aria Sequoia (formerly Cindy Knapp) of Seattle; and Ruth Knapp of Oakland, California; son John Knapp of Vancouver, Washington; daughter-in-law Alice (Steve) Knapp of Portland, ; step-son John Gregg Myles, step-daughters Carol Damberger, Phyllis Candido, Catherine Miller, and Dorothy Perry all from Canada. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

"So you plant your own garden and decorate your own soul,
Instead of waiting for someone else to bring you flowers.
And you learn that you really can endure,
That you really are strong,
And you really have worth,
And you learn and learn,
With every goodbye, you learn."

Sister of Frances Gertrude Gallagher Ryha Dash, Eugene Gallagher, Edward C. Gallagher, Katherine Gallagher Strohmeyer Smyklo, Patricia Gallagher Metzler, Roy Gallagher, and Kenneth Gallagher.
