FUNERAL HELD TODAY OVER GEO. KNAPP BODY
Last rites for George Knapp, 60, Sarasota barge operator who was drowned early yesterday morning in the bay near New Pass Bridge, were held this morning from the funeral parlor of Thacker and Van Gilder at 10:30 with Rev. Stewart Long in charge. Burial followed in Rosemary cemetery.
Mr. Knapp was drowned early yesterday morning while engaged in towing a barge with his boat. There were no witnesses to the accident. It is presumed that he was seized with some form of a heart attack and fell overboard from the barge, which he had apparently boarded for some unexplained purpose.
Discovery of Mr. Knapp's death resulted from the finding of his boat drifting near the New Pass Bridge by the bridge tender, J.J. Crowley, who summoned aid. The body was recovered yesterday at about 2 p.m. No inquest was deemed necessary by authorities who were on the scene.
Survivors include his widow and several grown children by a first wife, who reside elsewhere.

Work of members of the crew of local Sea Scout ship, "southern Cross" in aiding to recover the body of Georg Knapp, 60, Sarasota man drowned in the bay early yesterday was commended today by officials.
Thirty minutes after the crew had received the call for volunteers, six youths had been excused from their classrooms at the high school and were on the scene of the tragedy.
Under the direction of Skipper Arthur R. Clarke, the youths, Hubert Schucht, Reed Whittle, Charles Matheny, Howard Anderson, Ray Richardson, Frank Binz and Ben Bond, patrolled the channel in a motor boat Flowing the locating of the body by Fred Williams while scouting the vicinity in his airplane, the Scouts were instrumental in recovering it.
Sea Scouts here have rendered valuable aid in similar occurrences in the past several years. Besides nautical activities, the ship has aided the municipal authorities and other organizations during the pageant and in the observance of Memorial Day and Armistice Day.
The ship, sponsored by the Sarasota Yacht club, was organized over three years ago with County Judge Arthur Clarke as skipper. Since its formation it has been an active factor in the training of the boys of the city.
