Because of his musical abilities and his early association with the NSDAP, he was sometimes referred to as "Hitler's piano player" or his "court composer." In the early 1900s, he had also composed several songs for Harvard's football team.
He was the son of Edgar Hanfstaengl (1842-1910) and Katharina Wilhelmina Heine (1859-1945), and brother of Erna Hanfstaengl.
