He won acclaim with films like "The bitter tears of Petra von Kant (1971), Maria Braun´s marriage (1978), Lola (1981), Veonika Voss (1982) and Querelle (1982). For television he made "Berlin Alexanderplatz" (1980), a 15-hour television series. His hard life caught up with him though, and he died from an overdose in Munich 1982.
