Gerhard Bachmann was a certified engineer, doctor of medicine and professor, born at Meran-Obermais in what is today South Tyrol (Alto Adige in Italian).

He was a leading expert on acupuncture and founded the German Society for Acupuncture. He was awarded an honorary professorship by Meiji University in Osaka, Japan in 1956. He published over 300 works, including teaching texts and providing scientific proof of the effects of acupuncture.
