Ellen Gardner disliked her fist name and never used it. She always went by Ellen and when she needed to use her legal name it was E. Ellen.

E. Ellen Gardner, 84, died June 5, 1999 at Merrill. She was born March 26, 1915 in Merrill, the daughter of LeRoy and Nancy (Gerald) Gardner. She worked for the Katahdin Phone Company for 30 years and was the town reporter for the Houlton Pioneer Times. She was the secretary for the Merrill High School Alumni and the Smyrna Mills Methodist Church, where she was a member for 54 years.

She is survivied by three sisters, Sophronia Gardner of Merrill, Eloise Clampffer of Philadelphia and Mattie Simpson of Hampton; one brother John Gardner of Atlanta, Georgia, serveral nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday at Smyrna Mills Methodist Church, where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, with the Rev. Mary Miller, officiating. Internment will be in Merrill Cemetery.
