The son of Jonathan D. and Lucinda (Dees) Parish and, like his father, was a Shoemaker by occupation. Joseph served with Ford's Texas Volunteers from Jan. 5, 1853 to Aug.5, 1858. He served in the Civil War with Field and Staff, Mounted Rangers from Jan. to June 1861. He married Matilda Grant in 1869, Bibb County, Georgia; second married Julia A. Williams in 1894 in Los Angeles, California. He died at the age of 81 in the Los Angeles branch of U.S. National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers.
